  • Community Crunch 355: ARK Roadmap, EVO Event, and More!

     welcome_crunch2023-1.png

    Hey there Survivors!

We’re ready to reveal ARK's roadmap for the next year, covering various game-related initiatives, new platforms, and media.  The community’s support continues to be incredibly humbling and inspiring for the team, and that enthusiasm helps drive us toward creating the ultimate survival franchise. What we’ve planned has changed due to many shifting factors, but we believe it will ultimately provide the most fun and excitement for everyone who enjoys ARK.

We know you’re eager for the lowdown on our plans and more transparency regarding what’s behind the curtain, what’s evolved, and what has sprung anew, and we’re ready to share that with you… But before starting, we want you to meet our new friend!

    And now, for the roadmap…

    ark2heading.png

After careful consideration, we have decided to delay the sequel's launch to the end of 2024, when it will still launch exclusively on Xbox, Game Pass, and Windows distribution platforms (Steam/PC). We’ve put much thought into delaying ARK 2 for the betterment of the final product and the team's well-being. This news will be disappointing to many - we feel it too - but we’re confident this heavy decision is the right one.

So why the delay? Our goal is to make ARK 2 the best game it can be and provide a truly exceptional and rewarding experience for players. Unreal Engine 5 is incredibly new technology to us (and all developers), and we aim to use this cutting-edge tech to its fullest potential while creating a game with never-before-achieved scope at Studio Wildcard. As we learn more about the engine and develop the sequel, we have adapted our workflows and adjusted our pipelines to accommodate this new next-generation paradigm, and because of everything that involves, we need more time for development.

We sincerely apologize for this delay and genuinely appreciate your understanding. Your support and passion are vital to us, and we will continue to work intensively to deliver the ultimate next-gen dinosaur survival experience. With that in mind, we do not plan to showcase any gameplay/screenshots/videos of ARK 2 this year; however, we intend to keep you informed and engaged in the development process by regularly showcasing more ARK 2 assets in the months ahead, leading to our gameplay reveal next year.

But! Our desire to push the boundaries of what ARK 2 is on a next-generation platform has led us to the decision to create an intermediary Unreal Engine 5 ARK product utilizing some of the new technology we are building, allowing us to further our mastery of the new engine and ultimately battle-test some of our riskier technical advancements. We’ll gain a deep understanding of how well the rendering and lighting techniques work on console, what performance will be like, whether we can optimize and deliver interactive water and foliage on a widescale basis, and much more. We will deliver cross-platform modding, cross-platform multiplayer & a new account system, informing us about other changes we should consider for ARK 2. Due to the scope of all the technical and QOL changes required for such a next-gen experience, it is not feasible to make this new version of ARK backward compatible, which led us to conclude that this would need to be a separate product.

We also recognize that ARK 2 has some pretty significant design changes from the original game, which may not make it as appealing to everyone (looking at you, Souls-like combat, primitive-only weaponry, and strict third-person mechanics – and an overall “very serious” tone), which is why we feel it is essential to provide players with a fully next-gen version of the original experience to ensure that fans can continue to enjoy the ARK they know for years to come.

We’re thrilled to share this new ARK journey with you this year -- bringing players from PC, Xbox, and PlayStation together in a next-generation version of the game you love, topped off with revolutionary cross-platform modding.

ARK: Survival Ascended is a next-generation remaster of our beloved ARK: Survival Evolved, harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5. It will be released on Xbox Series S/X, PC (Windows/Steam), and PlayStation 5 by the end of August 2023. The base game will include The Island, SOTF, and all the “Non-Canon” DLC maps (which will be added to ASA over time).

Xbox Series S/X and PC players will only be able to get it via an ultimate-value bundle known as the ARK Respawned Bundle. This bundle includes ownership of both ARK: Survival Ascended AND ARK 2 and will be priced at $49.99. This bundle will be available to purchase from the end of August for up to 1 year (after which ARK: Survival Ascended and ARK 2 will be sold separately). Additionally, the bundle will provide players access to an exclusive 1-month closed-beta to ARK 2 in 2024 before the rest of the general public can play ARK 2.

PlayStation 5 users will be able to get their hands on ARK: Survival Ascended as a standalone next-gen game at launch in August 2023 for $39.99.

All the expansion packs will be sold separately on all platforms:

    • $19.99 for Explorer’s Pass, which includes Scorched Earth, Aberration (Q4 2023), and Extinction (Q1 2024).
    • $19.99 for Genesis Pass, which includes Genesis Part 1 (Q1 2024) and Genesis Part 2 (Q2 2024).

At ARK: Survival Ascended’s launch, players will have access to The Island, Scorched Earth, and the new revamped game mode, Survival of the Fittest.

In addition to many other new features, ARK: Survival Ascended will feature the following improvements and enhancements:

    • Unreal Engine 5 Overhaul with Nanite, Lumen and RTXDI
    • Dynamic Water
    • Interactive Foliage
    • Unreal Engine 5 performance gains: instanced-rendering (large-bases etc.), threaded server networking, and native physics engine
    • Cross-platform Multiplayer
      • This includes cross-platform accounts and cross-progression, cross-voice chat & friends, etc. No matter what platform you start playing on, you can access your account, character, dinos, and items on a different platform for the ultimate cross-platform experience.
    • Cross-platform Modding
      • We recognize the power of giving players the tools and capability to define their survival experience, so we want to take cross-platform one step further by working with  Overwolf  to introduce an industry-first cross-platform modding experience where mods created on PC are delivered directly to end-users’ consoles from a custom modding backend.
      • The modding capability will include FULL blueprinting support ;), stacked mods, and maps. Everything that is currently possible on the Steam version of ARK: Survival Evolved and more will be possible on the new system and be available for end-users to play on consoles in all modes.
      • Premium Mods: Reviewed by Overwolf and Wildcard for quality control and value, Mod authors will optionally be able to specify price points for their Mods (with 50% of the price point going to the Mod author). This is necessary to pay for the custom infrastructure required for Overwolf to support, administrate, and deliver Mods to the console.
      • We plan on streamlining the process of upgrading legacy ARK: Survival Evolved mods to the next-generation platform. We plan to reach out to current/former sponsored modders in preparation for the launch of ASA with the tools they need to get their mods ready before the launch.
    • Cross-platform Anti-Cheat
    • Survival of the Fittest
      • SOTF will be integrated into the main product as a new fully-supported game mode. It will have a dedicated team that will continue to work on more gameplay changes, mechanical improvements, quality of life, maps, and balance adjustments. The initial mode will be revamped with an exclusive ARK: Survival Ascended update, including:
        • Upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 with complete cross-platform and cross-modding support (the SOTF UE5 source content will be released for modders to utilize as they wish within ASA)
        • Scorched Earth SOTF Map
        • Matchmaking queue
        • Character and Creature customization with cosmetics
        • Local Lobby where you can group up with your friends, configure the look of your survivor and dinos, and queue up for lobbies together
        • Lots of bug-fixes and balance and functionality improvements
    • Art Assets are being upgraded throughout the entire game
    • Newly-designed holiday events take advantage of the next-gen pipeline, released as mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • New content, QOL improvements, balance, and gameplay changes, including but not limited to:
      • Updated mini-map (pan, zoom, pings, etc – similar to the SOTF mini-map)
      • New structures (display cases, smaller TEK Teleporters) & building QOL improvements (snap fixes, increased foundation support, foundation height adjustments, and more)
      • Queueing System
      • New third-person camera (with the option to opt out)
      • Directional Sprinting and Walking
      • Ping system
      • Gamepad cursor
      • Chibi Slot and Skins Tab
      • Balance passes (e.g. Cave Entrances, MEKs, Aberration Creatures, more breedable creatures, etc)
      • …and more! (seriously, a lot more, this list isn’t exhaustive, but it’ll get super long if we list everything, and there’s more we’ll decide to do between now and launch too)

    LiveOperationssubheading.png

We understand there will be questions regarding LiveOps for the product, so we’ll review some key areas now.

    • Final Content Update: In June for ARK’s 8th Anniversary, we’ll release ARK: Survival Evolved’s final content update, which includes the fan-voted Rhyniognatha!
    • Cross-platform: It’s important to note that ARK: Survival Evolved (ARK:SE) and ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) will coexist but will not support crossplay between the two games. ASA will have undergone profound functional changes which prevent it from being compatible with the previous game.
    • Holiday Events: We plan to develop and release ASA-exclusive holiday content that takes advantage of the next-gen pipeline released in mods, so they’re always available to play!
    • Official Servers: With the launch of ASA at the end of August, we will be taking down all Official Servers on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC for ARK: Survival Evolved – at that time, the final save-datas from the ARK: Survival Evolved Official Servers will be uploaded for players to re-host on their own servers or play in singleplayer/non-dedi, as well as slightly earlier snapshots. You will still be able to play on single-player, non-dedicated, player-dedicated, and unofficial servers. ARK: Survival Ascended will have its own fully supported Official Network for all platforms.
    • Feature Sunset: With the launch of ASA, we will be ending official support for Primitive+, Split Screen, and Procedurally Generated Maps. These aspects of the game will not be ported to the new Unreal Engine 5 version.
    • We will look into releasing the source files for Primitive+ for those that wish to repurpose aspects of it for mods.
    • ARK: Survival Ascended Updates: The remaster will have regular updates to resolve bugs, introduce new content, balance changes, and quality-of-life improvements for years to come.
    • ARK: Survival Evolved Updates: will be limited to crashes and critical bug fixes.

    paidexpansionheading.png

We plan to release a new canonical-story expansion pack for ARK: Survival Ascended that will be available in Q4 2023. This DLC will feature four new creatures, which we’ll share more details about later this year!

    ARK_Ultimate_Bundle_2560x1440_V05.jpg

ARK: Ultimate Survivor Edition has been off to a great start on Nintendo Switch. The insightful crew at Digital Foundry called it "one of the most radical improvements in game quality (they've) ever seen."

So far, we've launched Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Ragnarok, with Extinction coming on April 11th. Our current estimated timeline for the rest of our significant releases is as follows:

    • April 2023 - Extinction
    • May 2023 - Small Tribes servers
    • June 2023 - Genesis Part 1
    • October 2023 - Genesis Part 2
    • Winter 2023 into 2024 - Remaining community maps

Spring has been an exciting time on the platform, with the release of the Carcharodontosaurus now roaming around The Island and Ragnarok. Eggcellent Adventure begins on April 3rd, bringing this full event to players on Nintendo Switch for the first time. Lest we forget ARK: Dinosaur Discovery, which also saw a content update to v1.5, recently adding a full-featured in-game map and numerous gameplay improvements. As a reminder, ARK: Dinosaur Discovery is a separate download available for FREE to all digital owners of ARK on Nintendo Switch.

Finally, we are happy to welcome a swath of new players from Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan & South Korea. Both titles are now available locally on Nintendo Switch in those regions from our partners at Spike Chunsoft.

    arkmobilerevamp.png

We have some important news for Mobile Survivors! At the year's end, we anticipate a relaunch of ARK: Mobile as a completely revamped product. It will be based on a graphically improved version of the Switch codebase due to the increased power generally available with mobile devices and include new Switch features and content and mobile-specific changes. We plan to release all the expansion packs and non-cannon maps over time into this revamped version, and from that point onwards, ARK: Mobile will have its product lifecycle and roadmap.

ARK: The Animated Series has completed the animation and cast recordings of all its 14 initial episodes, which are currently in post-production (VFX, sound mix, etc.). We're delighted with how the show turned out -- it's an epic melodramatic love letter to dinosaurs, fantasy/sci-fi, and of course ARK itself -- though we have not placed it yet with any platform, hence the lack of news in that area. So as soon as there's more to report, we will let you know!

Thank you everyone for reading through this substantial write-up, and stay tuned for more information on the ARK: Survival Ascended in the months ahead toward its August launch!

lots of drama in this thread, and that is understandable when you spend thousands of hours into this game

i personally put 7000 hours into this game since 2018, i stopped playing it early march and therefore lost all my bps and top dino, the difference here , it was my choice, and i was ok with that.

am i going to buy ark ascended? yes probably if we get new content new dinos and new map, honestly $50 isn't much for the thousands of hours you can play, i think i payed about $60 for ark 1 and all the extensions, so $60 for 7000 hours of play time is really a ridiculous small price.

don't mind starting over from scratch, anyway that was what i was doing on every new map, for me the fun is in the early phases (finding your spot, building and upgrading your base and weapons, hunting for good stat dino etc) not really a fan of the tek stage.

There's humor…just at the sheer absurdity of the situation and the gall of this half baked company to pull a stunt like this.

They are doing what last of us did but worse this is like if last of us made the new game and deleted everyone's save files and took away the multiplayer and the dlc made you buy everything again if last of us took 6 years to do the campaign

wildcard about the animated series just ask netflix they've had quite a few shows about games so maybe their open to more also since its such a widely used streaming service it might bring easier access to the show such as people not having to buy another subscription. of course some people who dont have netflix wouldn't have access but its just an idea seeing as so many people use it and again netflix has had shows from game studios and I have heard they're getting an assassins creed one too so netflix I would say is the way to go for an ark show or future ark movie.

    I agree!

I've been looking at the announcement since it dropped, and hoping against hope there was a very bad, poor taste april fool in there but it is just all so so wrong, I can't find anything to joke about in it.

We all knew ark 2 would be delayed since it's WC they don't know how to drop anything on time.

The rest is just 💩. New shiny servers and massive improvements -- great and it's 50$ plus 40$ for the dlc's AGAIN prettier but the same content.

4 people in my extended family/household play ark at this moment.

There is NO WAY-- we are paying again for the same maps etc all over again just nope.

I'll bandage my 18k hours and go on my way to another game. I'll miss my dinos and all of the work we put into years of our lives.. ( not interested in single player ).

But we will not be among those that just gobble it up and forget all that has happened.

Yea. It's like one of those tasteless "I have cancer" pranks. Only funny for the one doing it - and only because nobody's close enough to punch 'em for it.

At first, I wasn't going to be commenting but after hours of anger being built up, you have it coming to you.

I have played ARK SURVIVAL Since it first was released in BETA STAGES IN 2015. Use to love this game, played non stop even though my computer was not able to handle it, after 60 hours My PC fried and was not able to play again.

In 2019 when pandemic happened I was able to get a PC and play, and Purchased all the DLC's that were available, when GEN 2 Came out I purchased GEN 2, excited with how many features and promised dinos.

Since the purchase of GEN 2, There has been NON - STOP CRASHING + BUGS. Sometimes over 15 crashes a day, sometimes worse. Loosing full inventories of items, Stryders, Many Skiffs, and more plus not to mention taming and building taking forever.. When server crashes it rolled back sometimes 30 minutes back in the early days and now only 15 minutes. Each time would have to redo things we have already done taking away our time.

Although reporting this to their discord, their own report area and on outages, we have not had a fix to this problem. I don't know how anyone would expect us to repay for Genesis Pass for a 2nd time for much needed bug fixes which should have been made sense its first week of release.

Official servers being offline for more than 1 day, this year had a server down for 2 days even though reported it multiple times.  This doesn't include over 15+ a day it crashes with the 1 hour+ downtime each time it crashes.
    - Everyone on the server originally thought maybe some fixing had been done, and ultimately it had not. The performance and crashing was worse than before.

Since the beginning it has been a product we want to play but cant even enjoy without performance issue and crashing. Even though still had hoped and reported it to Outages, so many outage reports!!! could easily reach over 5,000 reports over the span that GEN 2 Has been released.

I have contacted their Discord, Support I contacted them multiple times to get this fixed, and all you are told is "continue to report on outage report"

With not even being able to enjoy fully the amount of time gen 2 has been released on official servers.  We paid money for something that thought would be amazing and was terrible, full of bugs, crashing with no support and felt very shady.

Regardless, have been playing this game Since 2015 and continued to have HOPE and wish that Wild Card would have value for their customers who paid money for their game -> but they do not care, at least that is how they make us feel after paying for a half a$$ project, and not doing anything to fix it.

It's truly a Slap in the face, after almost 7,000 hours of supporting this Game, encouraging others to buy DLCS, buy your game & experience your services only to be stepped on and asked to pay more money.

We are obligated to this free upgrade, as Jeremy promised on twitter months before the announcement was made, and yes you did say in announcement "things changed"..

Easily could have managed money from ARK 1 SALES & DLC's BACK INTO THE BROKEN DLC'S AND GAME.

Instead you have taken our money given us a HALF-A$$ Project Invested the money into ARK 2, and or other things, not to mention trying to convince us to REPAY FOR BASE GAME + DLC's. (which includes much needed updates and bug fixes that is needed and has been for a long time)

Completely unreasonable and as a company who claims to care about their customers shame on you.

I will not be supporting Wild-Card Games, including ARK 1, ARK 2, or any other games produced or manufactured by WILD CARD. 😠

Will not recommend anyone purchasing their future games if this is how they plan to treat us.

Remember if they did this with a game that has a huge community who are passionately expressing their opinions and be told we are to ungrateful or ignore us for asking for the bare minimum. They will easily do it again With ARK ASCENDED and ARK 2 + any other games they may create.

Uninstalling Ark was a choice I made after feeling scammed by this Road Map which had me very excited and was looking forward to learning more about and was left feeling disappointed and uneasy. It is truly sad losing all my hard work, but what is more unacceptable is charging us for product we already own.

I hope this is a joke if not im done with Ark and everything wildcard will produce in the future. taking us everything away to experiment with their ur5 and shuting officials down to make sure we buy ASA. I would buy it anyways you dont need to shut down officials for that. 1 and a half year ingame playtime gets killed from wildcard. It was a mistake to be loyal to them we got all fooled they want to replace the community and they think ur5 will helpem with that. we keept the game alive no one else.

im 21 now and im missing 1,5 years as long as wildcard cant give them back to me they shouldnt close official.

This a complete Joke, Why should we have to pay for a game we already payed, why do we have to pay for DLC's that we already payed, how many games that launch theyr 2nd version and still leave the fist one going on live, and ppl can choose if they play the new one or not, if thay can afford do buy the new one or not, exemple diablo, destiny, you can still play al pass games on theyre servers and free, no bullpoop of payed dlc's again, buy the game again if you want to play it, all your progress wil be lost, whats the point of getting ark to then ?? to play it 5 or 6 years and go trough all this again, ark 3 , all your progress gets deleted, and if you want to play pay it all again.

If i need to pay all over again for something i already payed before and if i cant play it online anymore with mi friends cause your poopty servers will be wiped, ill shure not buy ark 2 and surelly quit it 100%

It was better do just had announced like this -  We WildCard dont give a raptor for you players, we just want your money, we dont give a raptor if you will no longuer be able to play this game, we just want to force you to buy a new one that we dont even know if it will please majority of you.

I agree with ark 2 start from 0 , but wipe all these years of progress and gameplay dont think thats fair.

    Real disappointed with this decition.

On one hand, its a prank so lighten up a little. But on the other hand you're totally right. This is an absolutely idiotic prank to pull. So many people probably just deleted their game and will never look at another Community Crunch so they'll never even know it was a prank. The only way they could really save this is if today they're like "April Fool! ARK 2 Releases TODAY" and surprise everyone with the actual game or at least the beta

It's hard to lighten up when they've said absolutely nothing to the massive backlash they are getting for it. So either they meant it & are trying to think of something to save their own skin, or they don't want to admit they ducked up with this *prank* and royally pissed of their playerbase.

After posting about this last night, I made the decision to completely uninstall Ark. It sucks, I'll miss my totally rad bases and dinos and I actually feel the pain of loss right now. All that time building and taking pride in surviving and cooperating with my fellows. But WildCard telling us about their "sunset" of doom totally effing ruined it for me. Why TF would I even want to play another minute on servers that are going to be shut down? No thanks. Since my original post last night I've erased Ark and got back onto Blizzard. I played World of Warcraft for 16 years STRAIGHT and my account/characters/progress have never been messed with, it's all still intact. That's one thing that Blizzard has over WildCard, they don't mess with years of progress, regardless of upgraded technologies and revamped gameplay. Even my original Overwatch  characters and achievements are available in the new Overwatch2.

I'm super pissed at you, WildCard. Thanks to your little news brief yesterday I quit everything Ark. You sucked the joy out of any gameplay moving forward.

And this is where I leave you.

First I'll start by saying wiping officials is hard to take BUT part of the fault has to lie with all you mega/alpha moron tribes who wouldn't allow anyone to build up on "Their" servers no matter how many was in the tribe wanting to join, solos, duos being wiped with level 400 odd dinos shows the idiocy of some of you! Wiping anyone and anything killed servers, why did you do it? "Its PVP" Yea well WC was always going to be the ultimate Mega tribe with the power to wipe you all and thats what they will now do in August because they are actually "Their" servers!

Its a shame you cretins didn't realise this sooner! What is it that you are scared of? A 2 man tribe wanting to build up on a server or was it that you were all so bored you just attacked anything not realising that it was pushing even more people away from the game? Just because it states PVP does not mean kill anyone trying to join, you keep servers alive by having a community base where you help each other and protect that server to a point, raid bases, race tracks etc are what keep servers alive.

The player base on official is tiny compared to what it used to be and alot of that has to be aimed at those above! It was always going to come.

As for WC's new cashgrab I just lol because so many of you will be stupid enough to buy it all over again, its not right no matter what excuses a couple have mentioned on here, pay for the new game Ark 2 by all means but to charge for the same game running on a different engine is bang out of order and then the DLC's as extra is even worse! THEY DO IT BECAUSE YOU WILL BUY IT!

I cant wait for you to pay for Arks new upgrade only to be wiped again when Ark 2 does finally release :)

Karma realy is a bitch :)

If we only have 4 months to live, give us some of our dieing wishes: Breeding Griffins, transfer with element and tributes, maybe fly in caves or more dinos that can go in boss fights (thyla, flyers, many more) I'm sure there are many more,  but those are mine.

So $50 for the island and some random maps you're not being specific on

'non canon' maps means Ragnarok, Center, Valguero, Crystal Isles, Lost Island and Fjordur.

The same game with graphic improvements, they close the servers to force you to change and apart from that they charge you again as new hahaha 🤣 minimum should be free if you already have all the dlcs it doesn't make sense to pay for the same
