  • Community Crunch 344: Community Creature Submissions, EVO Event, and More!

Welcome to another edition of the Community Crunch!

    ARK_Fjordur_KeyArt_1920.jpg

We're excited to announce that we're rerunning a popular community contest again, where players can submit their own dinosaur ideas to be added to ARK.

We've seen some incredible fan-made designs and creature submissions in pasts contests so we can't wait to see what you come up with this time. Whether you're a seasoned player or new to the community, we encourage you to dust off those notebooks and let your creativity run wild. Feel free to create a dossier, design a creature, and tell us how you see it fitting into the current ARK meta.

While we may not adopt all of the gameplay ideas, we will be looking at and considering everything submitted while using upvotes as a way to determine entries for a second round of voting. Use Wikipedia links and references to help with your pitch, show us what abilities this creature might have, and what it may look like.

Check out the Creature Submission Guidelines for more information on the submission process and hop over to the Creature Submission Forum to see the current entries. The entry period will end at 1PM Pacific on January 23rd, so don't wait - get your ideas in.  We are looking forward to seeing your ideas come to life!

And for svartalfheim if they put this map in official it could have some cool mini bosses to fight just like fjordur and a cool final boss to.

Honestly if we do get a new map I'd prefer we move away from the Nordic (or European in general really) themes. Having three maps that feature them would just get a bit stale. I'd much rather doubling down on the Aztec/mayan/Incan themes we got a hint of in lost island. Full jungle style map, lots of those funky ruins and pyramids with a few structures around them that allow for building.

I'm going to keep that in mind because I'm going to be starting a map of my own here in a few days so i think i will do an Aztec kind of map. Also since i'm doing that map what do you think of quetzalcoatl and ahuizotl being creatures for this map. I love Aztec Mythology and their pyramids so this will be fun.

quetzalcoatl and ahuizotl would kind of be this maps fenrir but actually tamable. And ill make bosses based around them too.

I'd definitely say go for adding them as boss creatures. If you really wanna go full on mythos you could have a cave system leading to a xibalba type area full of all sorts of awful stuff but also the best loot

Yea what i was thinking is that there are going to be smaller tamable versions and then huge boss versions of them. I was even thinking about giving this map lore and giving it explorer notes, there would be some in the pyramids and temples.

@CosmicSkeleton Do you want to give me some ideas and things you would like to see on this map.

Sure thing. Well I mentioned the xibalba thing already: cave network leading to an underground biome, preferably one more volcanic in nature given xibalba's nature as the underworld/hell. I'd also suggest having drakes and deinonychus on the map given their feathered serpent aesthetic aligning quite nicely with Aztec imagery. If it can be done then having temples dedicated to specific creatures in alignment with cultural beliefs (I.e. Drake temple for feathered serpents, saber temple as a jaguar expy, desmodus/onyc temple for the bats) would be a nice move as well. While smaller tamable quetzals are good I would suggest a big one as a boss that requires exclusively giga hearts as a tribute would probably be pretty snazzy too since they were all about carving out people's hearts back then. If this is meant to be a Aztec deal then it would also be based on central and South American topography, so rather than a giant ocean or lake you'd take more after the Amazon and have a bunch of interconnecting rivers as the sources of water.

Thanks i like the temple idea. For the xibalba i thought that there would be multiple caves scatered across the map leading to the xibalbas witch are the different mini bosses that give you op loot. I'm also adding a couple of south american dinos too. For the Quetzal boss i have one of to designs for it either a two headed version with a green head with feathers and feathered wings and a red head with dragon wings, or a green one with gold armor and a helmet that is based on those bulky and blocky. Tell me witch one you think it should be. The summoning of the boss would be at the top of a sacrificial tower offering 5 Giga harts and the harts of the mini bosses, after you summon the boss you teleport to an El Dorado esk city where you can walk around. Once you get to the cities center where there is a giant temple where the Quetz bursts out of this temple. After you slay this massive beast you get armor(and or skins) and weapons. So tell me what you think about this stuff.

I'm thinking one head for the boss given Quetzalcoatl isn't typically depicted with multiple heads. A giant serpent with wings a "crown" of feathers is about the standard depiction if you can manage to make a model in game. Easiest way to go about that may be to use the basilisk model scaled up in size and add argentavis wings and drake plumes, though it would need some tweaks to look decent. The xibalba addition definitely has some weight to it as it encourages cave exploration with or without the mini boss requirement. The lead up to the boss fight while thematically quite nice in theory may drag a bit long for a non story map. Perhaps spawning in the center of some ruins and having the serpent  drop in from the sky and screech at the player should be sufficient .
