  • Community Crunch 114: Dino TLC, Console Ragnarok, Sales, & NVIDIA Freestyle!

Hey Survivors! Welcome to the latest edition of the Community Crunch! :Jerbhi:

The Community Crunch is where we share important things going on with ARK, as well as host contests and showcase creations made by the community!

    Dino TLC Preview #2!

At the end of last year, we were very excited to share with you the early progress of our Dino TLC update. We know it's something you guys have been looking forward to for a long time, so here we are with another update!

The plan is for the Dino TLC pass to role out in multiple phases. Throughout the next few months, some creatures will receive visual changes, as well as functional/gameplay changes. We are targeting the release of Phase 1 to take place during the week of February the 18th on PC. In addition to Dino TLC Phase 1, we will also be rolling out our turret limit to all Official Servers.

Today, we'd like to share some more screenshots and provide some insight into what we're planning for Phase 1 of the TLC pass. We've been reading all your feedback and suggestions regarding the creatures; our artists and gameplay team have found it to be beneficial in the decision-making process. Something to keep in mind is that not all creatures will receive a visual update, but we will cover ones we feel (with your feedback) need it. Sometimes there may be function gameplay changes which weaken certain aspects of creatures; however, if we take anything away, we always plan to add to it through another dimension.

Please remember that these are still works-in-progress (especially the fur!) and are therefore subject to change before final release, which includes both visual redesigns, as well as gameplay changes. Anywho, without further ado!

    The Direbear!

    large.Direbear.jpg

We believe the Direbear is in relatively secure place at the moment. Though, we're still planning on making a few changes to it!

When riding a Direbear, players will be immune to bees. They won't be able to knock you off your bear, and they will target focus the bear instead of the player.

In addition to this change, the bear will also be able to harvest honey from wild beehives without attracting bees or hurting the hive. Plus the amount of honey it receives will be 2x the standard amount.

    The Procoptodon!

    large.Procoptodon.jpg

Right now, if you're using The Procoptopdon, it's primarily for transportation. We don't see it as a highly combative mount, more so a utility creature with its fantastic jump, and ability to carry a second person.

    Here's what we're planning:

The Procotopdon will take reduced fall damage; its carry weight will be noticeably increased, and it will gain the new ability to carry baby dinos and small creatures in its pouch.

We figure that puts the creature in a decent spot, and the suggestion of using the pouch to carry babies was excellent, thanks /r/playARK!

    Ah, we've forgotten something...

Oh yeah! We're going to give it a kick! It'll be a pretty tough, and even be able to knock back some significantly large creatures!

    The Gigantopithecus A.K.A Bigfoot!

    large.TLCApe.jpg

We had quite a few ideas pop into our heads when coming up with some additional abilities for the Bigfoot. Did it need more strength and fighting abilities? What about how well it moves? Could we provide it with some new features? Ultimately, here's what we've settled on:

The Bigfoot will receive an armour-degrading attack; this means when it fights, it'll do more damage to your armour's durability. It is important to note that the armour-degrading attack will not affect the Yeti creatures found in the game.

Its movement needed some work! So we'll be giving it the ability to jump, which is kinda critical, considering it will need to know how to hop on and off all the zip-lines it's going to climb! Yup, that's right. It'll be able to use zip-lines!

In addition to those changes, we'll also be improving it's throwing ability, so it's more accurate (similarly to the Crab) and providing it with the ability to carry (on its shoulder) small creatures and throw them!

    The Direwolf!

    large.Direwolf02.jpg

It's a wolf.. and what are wolves good for? Hunting. Now if you're a wolf, and you're hunting, what exactly are you going to rely on the most? Your nose!

In Phase 1 of the update, we'll be introducing a new ability, a passive buff, as well as changing how it's howl and pack buff currently work.

First of all, the howl will activate the pack buff for a duration of time (we're thinking 5 minutes right now). This means it won't be active all the time, but to compensate, we'll be strengthing the buff to make the wolves stronger. As a little bonus is that when the Alpha Wolf howls, so will all the others! We're also planning for this mechanic play out with wild wolves too.

As for its nose, we're doing two things. We're providing it with a passive buff which allows it to sniff out people or creatures with less than 50% health, and this will be indicated via an icon. Think of it like the hunter's instinct.

Secondly, we'll be giving it a 'Sniff' tertiary ability to indicate nearby explorer notes, as well as detect stealth or buried creatures.

    and finally...

    The Tyrannosaurus Rex!

    large.Rex02.jpg

It's in a pretty strong place at the moment; it's considered one of the top-tier creatures. It is used continuously to fight bosses, as well as often seen in PVP. So we didn't want to give it too many changes to avoid making it overpowered, here's what our plan is:

We're going to improve it's movement/climbing ability so that it doesn't get stuck behind small rocks and can climb up steeper slopes.

We're also planning to change the Roar. When targetting an enemy and using the roar, the enemy will be forced to poop. There will be a cooldown on both the Rex and people who have recently pooped, so you can't pooplock them with 10 Rexes.

That pretty much covers it for Phase 1 of the TLC-pass, let us know what you think, whether we're missing anything glaringly obvious! We're also planning (not definite!) on carrying out more visual changes to the following creatures: Spino, Sarco, Carno, Raptor, Female Megaloceros, Plesio, and Argie. Let us know what you'd like to see improved with those, as well as any other creatures you think may need some love that we're overlooking.

    Ragnarok!

    large.ARK_RagnarokTitle.png

Console Ragnarok Fans! We are expecting to deploy the 99% completed version of the map to PS4 the week of January 15th. The Xbox patch for Ragnarok is currently in the certification process. ARK: Survival Evolved and the Scorched Earth Expansion Pack now include support for NVIDIA Ansel -- a revolutionary new way to capture in-game shots.  Compose shots from any position, adjust with post-process filters, capture HDR images in high-fidelity formats, and share the screenshots in 360 via a smartphone, PC or VR headset.

Learn more about these features from the NVIDIA blog.

Now let’s get to the contest!

There were 3 potential categories for survivors to enter their shots into and they were the following:

    Three Categories

Super Resolution: These should be taken at 8x Super Resolution. Players can optionally use Depth of Field effects accessible in Spectator mode by pressing the [Delete] key.

Panoramic 360 Stereoscopic 3D: These should be taken at 4x Super Resolution, in 360 Stereoscopic 3D mode. We will crop them to 2D for web display, while also providing the 3D version for viewing within VR display.

Freeform: Any settings, whacky and creative use of Ansel filters are encouraged. Adding humorous titles/captions in Photoshop is also acceptable for this category!

And now without further ado, here are your entries!

The carno is supposed to be the cheetah right? so make it faster, i want it to be the fastes land carnivore the theisland.

If your gonna do the female megaloceros you can do the male aswell, give them a decent jump, atleast 2 walls high (i would go 3 tbh). and for the love of god give them a fall damage reduction.

I'm surprised the Ankylo isn't on your list to redo with all the rigging problems it has!  At the very least, fix the spikes on its sides that are being pulled too far/not far enough and/or the wrong way by the wrong bones!

    • How would a sarco hunt ? grab on its pray consume a lot of stamina and drown it ! i would also like to see a change on its movement and abilities, what i have in mind basically make it feel like its a cold blooded reptile witch means give it the need to stop and take a breath more frequently than other animals and then burst again with crazy power plus a "buff" i guess?! when it has full stamina the first hit it lands deals more damage than the others. Don't really know how to explain it better.
    • Spinosaurs, i am OK with just a new model and a better roar animation perhaps similar to the direbear, basically get up on it's back legs roar and then fall back down again and maybe the ability to sprint on deep water ?
    • And then the carno don't really know what u could do with it just change it's model and make it look more spiky with 3D osteoderms instead of just a texture, like the one in the juraassic world 2 trailler ?
    • Raptor ! Give it more feathers for ffs !!!
    • About plesiosaurus i always thought it's head looked weird !
    • Female megalosaurus maby give it the ability to kick you to death ?!
    • Argent is it possible to give it an air dive attack that stuns it's victim and deals dmg over time similar to thylacoleo. Basically give it an attack similar to a real life eagle hunting rabbits.

Perhaps the carno could peirce armor with secondary attack.

I would love to see the Pachy getting a tlc ( Its to weak and small ) and Maybe the Baryonyx its should have more like a duck beek with a piece of skin under it , the pachrhinosaurus needs a better running mechanic , the dilo needs to be bigger , doedicurus needs Some fur on his belly more like a armadillo , the giga needs to be a lott smaller Maybe Its name is giga but iT isnt giga at all , quetzal needs a longer pointier beek , the terror bird needs more feathers on his butt and it needs a longer and pointer beak and Maybe Make the males have more feathers on thear head ( more like a mohawk ) THAT WAS IT I THINK!

keep up the good work i really see Some huge improvements compared to the beginning of ark!

Also! Can Giganto get sitting animation like the Megatherium so he can sit and guard my base like a Boss? You know? How Gorillas sit while they eat and what not? I think that would be a good little option in his menu when he's not being used. plus as I said... it would look awesome in the base. lol

Tamed Trilobites produce oil overtime please........and what do you think of servers that cannot attack each other but can go to other servers and raid. This is something i think alot of people could get into.

Server Wars would be awesome! it would get Alphas out of certain servers and give them something to really do also! The Trilobites producing oil is a good touch too.

Oh and will Turtles really be able to go in their shells? if so can that be a defense option to keep them in when they are idle also? plus the Doedicurus would benefit from being able to roll-up as a defense option because they don't ever seem to after being tamed? Leaving defense-mode Doedics around for mining would be a big help. Plus Turtles could act as storage also and the defense option would also keep your loot safe early game, like a 1st tier biological safe.

A Turret mode for Wyverns would help a lot with the Turret-Nerf also. Now that would be base defense lol

I would love to see some work on more early/mid game underused mounts that would considered combat mounts but not useful and over looked in place of late game dinos. Ark has a lot of a lot of dinos many of them could become useful combat dinos with small buffs and new utility, unique abilites for both PvP and PvE that stronger more popular dinos (rex etc.) could not provide. I feel like that put a lot more attention on the early to mid game and give starting players a chance to have more fun and survival chance and change the meta of grinding up to high level and only tame the essentials as well as a change of pace to big tribe raiding adding more strategic and freedom and choice in what big tribes tamed and used in raids and defense. Btw love what you have done so far with the TLC!

The TLC is looking great! I'd love to see the pachy changed to make it more useful (and bigger). Also still would love the swish-swish-swish on the terror bird to be removed...feathers just don't make that sound.

I think this model looks better but I would like it more if it had a relaxed expression.large.png

I would love if when you do the spino TLC you can make him change his stance like the igunadon. Since we all know the scientists can't make up their minds if it was four legged or two legged. And I personally like the two legged ones. :Jerblove:

Spino, Sarco, Carno, Raptor, Female Megaloceros, Plesio, and Argie.Spino, Sarco, Carno, Raptor, Female Megaloceros, Plesio, and Argie.

There are many animals that needs a remodel. But i'm going to talk about this 7 animals. Basically, they have to be ANIMALS, not 3d models without souls.

Spino: Visual remodel. Improve swim animation (Something similar to the Baryonyx).  This is not a direct change for the spino, but it would be great seeing the Coelacanths running away when some Spino is hunting in the water. (Same when any piscivorous dinosaur or the player are hunting.)

Sarco: Visual remodel. Usually they're sunbathing with an open mouth (or not) or lurking calmly inside the water.  The Sarcos could have this two behaviours: Beeing calmly inside the water, waiting for a small prey to catch it out the water and drag it into the water. (Like the Kaprosuchus, but better)(It would be awesome if they could catch medium preys, like the Parasaur). And just fight when they have to defense themselves from a big animal.

Carno: Visual remodel with spikes from the head to the tail, like the actual crocodiles. This is because of osteoderms of the back and this means more protection in this area, so it could be logical reciving less damage in this zone.  Hability to charge against an enemy. It would be more fast, but you can doge it taking advantage of the fact that he can't change de direction very well.

Raptor: Visual remodel. You try to be accurate, doing a quadruped spinosaurus. But after, we have raptors without feathers. Why? Their most lethal weapon was his claw, why they don't use it? It is a perfect weapon to hurt their preys, being a clean cut, it would be possible that it cause bleeding. They had a biggest brain than other dinosaurs, so the had enough intelligence to hunt in groups.

Megaloceros: Visual remodel (Female). Breakable horns. More difficult to hunting them, running away from more far distance. Or maybe reacting aggressively defending himself only when he is enough strong to fight the hunter (Depending the lvl).

Plesio: Visual remodel. More area to attack the enemies using his long and flexible neck, bending it to reach the victims. And the hability to catch small fishes, since it is known that his mouth was perfect to that.

Argie: Visual remodel. Hability to detect corpses from largest distance. Change the spawn not to appear only in the mountains, as well in the sky, high enough not to be easily detected but low enough to detect corpses in the ground.

Plus: Biped animation for the bear to intimidate an enemy.

I think that the sarco should be a lot stronger but still slow on land and fast in water. It should have a lot more health (after all it is a big slow prehistoric crocodile). It should also have the ability to give people the broken leg debuff (it fits its creature) and do more damage (in real life crocodiles have the strongest bite force of any non-extinct animal). You could also give them a secondary attack (which could give the debuff mentioned before as well as a lot more damage but slower attack speed and more stamina cost).

Megaldons should be much stronger and bigger and should get a buff when a dead body is near by (blood lust or something).

Maybe fix Ravagers to where they can jump from line to line and also while on ravagers on lines you can hold all objects. While on zipline you can hold torches etc.

More grabs and hold for beasts. Like a grab and shake maul for bears to really show how aggresive they can be.

DEFINITELY WORK ON THE LOOK OF THE ARGY! When I first laid eyes on this game I always thought the argy looked like a giant derp-pigeon. (obviously there has been improvements since then but it still needs love)

YES, Spino, Carno, Raptor, Sarco, Plesio, Argy, Megaloceros. All things I would love to see improved upon, and already loving the new designs for the others.

    Some Suggestions:

Araneo - This has been suggested by a few people now, but I would love to see the spider gain the ability to climb walls/ziplines, and be able to make ziplines out of its silk.

Baryonyx - Please make the Bary be able to gather prime fish from salmon, after all it is a piscivore.

Turtle - The turtle should gain the ability to hide in its shell when threatened.

Dunkleosteus - The dunk is one of my favourite dinos, and considering its one of the few that can gather large amounts of oil, maybe give it reduced weight on oil.

Megalodon - The shark just needs a complete visual rework, its one the first dinos introduced and still has been given any love.

Morellatops - A cool idea for the Morellatops would be the ability to use its inventory as a cooking pot, as long as it has stored water.

Mosa - The Mosa needs to be updated so that it needs oxygen to breath as stated in the dossier, this would definitely help to balance this ocean powerhouse a bit.

Oviraptor - For the Oviraptor, make it so it won't eat any eggs once tamed, and give it the ability to gather any eggs around our base, to help with this mediocre task.

Parasaur - The Parasaur is so under used mid-late game, giving it the ability to act as a living trip-wire alarm would definitely keep this classic dino used by many in late game.

Phiomia - All I will say is, I want my Bacon.

Scorpion - I think the scorpion should get a secondary attack that does no damage, only torpor as they are no dinos that do this, and would be a welcome addition to any tribe.

Raptor - Raptors really need a visual overhaul, but they also need to gain the pack buff, and possibly give it the ability to latch onto larger prey such as Trikes & Stegos.

Spino - The Spino is an all time favourite for many, and giving it a visual improvement would do it wonders. Giving it a better roar, and the ability to gather prime fish from salmon would be amazing aswell.

Trike - The Trike is another that really needs a visual improvment, but it also needs a goreing charge attack similar to the Rhino. Maybe even improve both so that the charge attack impales smaller creatures similar to the kentro.

Trilobite - Last but not least, the Trilobite. Now that we have the ability to tame these, maybe give them a use, such as generating oil over a period of time.

Thanks for all you have done WC, really looking forward to the future of ARK :D

Interesting how you guys just happen to have a little sentence at the end about the turret nerf, seems like you guys are trying to distract people with this tlc crap so people dont notice that there is no new information about this turret nerf that no one wanted. Oh and by the way if your going to nerf stegoes can you do it right, they are still over powered.
