    Aberration Release, Turrets, PlayAnywhere, Holidays, and Black Friday!

    Happy Tuesday, Survivors! Normally our news posts go out on Friday, but we've got some exciting and also important news to share today. Let's go!

    Aberration Release Date!

    We are excited to announce we have a release date for Aberration: December 12th of this year. 

    All of us here at Studio Wildcard have been working diligently to progress through the Aberration workflow in anticipation of getting it into your hands. Aberration will be an ARK experience unlike anything survivors have seen so far. We hope you are all as excited as we are for its release!

    Update on Turrets

    A few days ago we announced a big change to the game wherein we would be limiting the use of turrets within a radius on our Official Servers. We have been keeping track of all the feedback, reading all the threads, and we understand that this is an important change. Therefore, we'll be making some modifications to our initial plan in order to deal with the concerns that have arisen, as well as ensure a smoother transition to the new turret system for all players. Here's what's going down:

    We are no longer hard-limiting turrets on the 5th of December, that timeline has changed. We still plan to hard-limit them, but it'll be pushed further out now that we'll be introducing a new kind of turret into the mix. Here's the new plan:

    PC players can expect the new "Heavy Turret" on the 27th, it will launch with an active server-side turret limit specifically for "Heavy Turrets". We'll take the time to monitor player feedback and our official servers to see if there's anything that we missed, so then we'll have time to consider how to fix and address those concerns. This means that if you're over the visual limit on your regular Auto Turrets, you'll be fine (for now). However, you won't be able to place the Heavy Turrets, unless you're within the limit. We recommend taking advantage of this time to slowly transition your base to using the new Heavy Turrets over the old ones. 

    When Aberration releases on the 12th December, it will have the turret hard-limit enabled on that map from the get-go. This means that neither regular Auto Turrets or Heavy Turrets can be placed on Aberration above the limit. After some time -- likely in the latter half of December -- this change will be enabled on the other maps, however, we'll be providing 2 weeks notice beforehand so you can make any adjustments as necessary. The idea is that you can immediately use the Heavy Turrets in the meantime to prepare for the change while ensuring your base remains well-defended.

    Console players can expect to see the arrival of the Heavy Turret when the Aberration launches. By this time, the Heavy Turret would have gone through multiple balance passes. The reason we opted to take this route is that we want to make sure it's in a good state before it went live on the console. Unfortunately, we don't have the ability to rapidly iterate as we do on PC, due to the cert process. Console will ultimately follow the same hard-limit activation as PC, albeit several weeks after the hard-limit is activated on PC.

    So, more stuff to talk about with regards to turrets. It's a party and everyone is invited!

    We've had a couple of pow-wows and hammered a few more things into stone, I just want to share them in kind of an official capacity as well as do a round-up of everything you need to know if you're just tuning in:

    - We found and identified that super dense clusters of turrets have been causing our servers to literally grind to a halt. In the worst of cases, a base full of turrets was causing a 400-500ms per tick delay on the server. (The entire rest of the game only takes up about 240-250ms in the worst cases. This means the turrets were costing up to twice as much as the entire rest of the game per server tick.
    - We're implementing a limit on the number of turrets you can have in a given radius. This radius is 10,000 Unreal Units (Which is about 100 meters). Picture attached shows a 10,000 uu sphere for visualization.
    - New BobCorp Automated Laterally Attenuated Nano-Cell Electronic Defense system will be available on the 27th of this month on PC, to allow players to start replacing their existing turrets.
    - Heavy Turrets will require normal turrets to craft.
    - Heavy Turrets are currently designed to be about 4-5x as powerful as a normal turret.
    - Stego Armor Plating is being made much less effective.

    The above are things that are guaranteed to be happening when we roll out these turret limiting changes.

    Here is stuff that's on our list to test and consider further:

    - Veggie Cake balancing.
    - Tek Turret needs to remain top-dog turret.
    - Is there anything we can further do to lower the cost of each turret to allow us to safely increase the number that players can place.
    - Knockback for some/all of the bullet-firing turrets?
    - % health damage on tick for Plant Species? (Slow poison? Prevent healing?)
    - Throwing explosives from the backs of dinos? 
    - Can we further weaponize bees?

    We're still reading all of the threads that are up and as we decide we're /definitely/ going to do stuff, I'll write up another post about it. 

    Expect the new turret on the 27th, and then all of our intrepid community members can make builds with them and if there's anything that they find that we missed, yay we'll have time to consider how to fix those things as well.

    Note: Xbox and PS4 will not be receiving these turret changes until after Aberration has been released.

    PlayStation 4 SIEA (Americas) Season Pass Skins

    Great news guys! Sony has enabled the skins on the backend and they should be available for players to acquire in game! As Sony marks the Season Pass bonuses as DLC, players will need to head into the PlayStation Store via their console dashboard and download them (they're free!).

    Xbox Play Anywhere

    In addition to the Aberration update, barring any cert issues, Xbox will receive the Play Anywhere update on December 12th. This update will allow crossplay between the Windows 10 version of ARK and the Xbox version. Survivors will be able to choose to allow crossplay on their unofficial servers or non-dedicated sessions with a simple checkbox on the host menu. 

    Holiday Events!

    We'd like to wish all survivors out there a Happy Thanksgiving and hope that have a great weekend! As for our plans, we will not be hosting an event for Thanksgiving this year due to our efforts being focused on Aberration and getting it out in December. We apologise for the lack of event this time of year, we love hosting holiday events, but unfortunately, we just didn't have the time to do so. Though, with Christmas around the corner, you won't have to wait long for a special Christmas themed Holiday Event!

    I am thinking they would require the same bullets. 

     

    However, if they were to introduce a new type of bullet. 

     

    Maybe require the fabricated sniper to use the new rounds and deal significantly more damage?

    wondering if there is any Legacy Servers Wipe List coming soon for these new maps soon too? Please let us know the date and release the wipe list as soon as possible.

    As for the toxicity and saltiness of some of the commenters on this and most of this forum's threads:
    There is no need to be so spiteful towards WC in your comments, if you were a customer service advisor and someone called you and started to shout down the phone in a rude and incoherent manner, you wouldn't feel so inclined to listen to their concern to the fullest, their attitude would make you not wanna help them.

    It's not cute, nor clever.

    Be constructive, not abusive.
    Gather your thoughts, reflect on what your writing down, read it before posting so you know it makes sense. 
    Anyone can write a rant, but for people to listen make sure that what you are writing is on topic, in the correct thread and above all constructive.

    Not dismissing that you have some frustrations and concerns, just make sure they are placed in the correct thread and worded with human decency.

    Really you are too busy to put together a holiday event. How long does it take to increase the rates and release skins that have all ready have been made for thanksgiving? You did a lame Halloween event this year. And now no Turkey event. You guys are turkeys.

    There is no longer any support offered to legacy servers. 

     

     This is official servers this is going on.  So many people buying the game and it sucks having to tell them sorry we are at limit, sorry all spots taken etc. Not everyone want's to play on unofficial and second everyone knows legacy will all end soon.

    everyone gets a respec when aberration comes out so if you're on console you'll be all set as heavy turret will be released with the new map on console. for PC i'm sure they'll do a respec on the 27th to learn the new engram.

    And then there the farce with SE why the feck was I charged for this when not long afterwards all these animals are put on ragnorock I feel ripped off and the fact there releasing aberration on the 12 there's no point in buying that because soon the stuff from it will be free anyway

    SE came out over a year ago, and Ragnarok only went official a few months ago. Besides you pay to play the SE map and it’s own gameplay mechanics, not for the creatures that are an added bonus so not map exclusive.

         All remaining issues aside, detailed updates like this one are much appreciated. And as its well known that when you give the "community" a voice in a forum like this you're going to have trolls and constant complaints, in my opinion, a game as complex as ark deserves some "grey area" with game mechanics. If the game never expanded as it has (in the time frame that it has) and would have just remained "the island" but had flawless game-play, sure, probably only 25% of the player base would have been content and continued to play.

     Sense our tribe started at "early access" I think Ark expanded into something  far beyond what WC expected or planned for and I (for one) enjoy the hell out of this game and look forward to anything new they add. 

        Point to this being, yeah it would be convenient if they focused on refining one of the maps and its "flaws". But as a development company with an ever growing fan base of players that expect new content. Putting out polished content for a game this complex would take WAY longer than the majority would stick around for. A great example would be Aberration. Regardless of reason for the "delays", everyone wants it yesterday... ANYWAYS... Hats off to you WC.  @Jen @Jatheish

    Yeah same here.

    It is nice for the Stego to have this special ability. And it is far more balanced than Paracers and Brontos with platform saddles on top covering the player with metalwalls because you can hit the stego-riding-player and he has to be in a certain angle to the turret.  So why dont leave the Stego as it works atm.?

    It seems the Wildcard team still DOESNT GET IT even if they add they heavy turret 100 turret limit is NOT enough how the hell are we supposed to defend our bases for example we got base at red obelisk how are we supposed to protect base with around 20 heavy turrets one ach side of the base + roof not to mention we wont be even able to place X plants and we will be at 100 limit only with the turrets not counting X plants + at red obi we have walls between those giant stone spires to prevent players from draining turrets or sniping dinos from the cliff that we have down there we wont be even able to mount those damn turret walls with turrets or X plants because we are in that stupid 34 foundation limit TOTALLY RETARDED

    Most of the world doesn’t celebrate thanksgiving and it also means you can spend it with your family

    I don't do official PvP because of those turret walls. Turret lag prevents creative metas. 

     

    You can fit 100 turrets in a 67 block diameter. With the new turrets you can have 100 turrets at 4-5 times the strength. So that is the potential fire power of 500 turrets in a 67 block radius. That is some solid fire power. Just need to be smart (new building metas!) and force raiders to funnel into your death trap. You can also use dinos in some pretty effective ways to melt tanky dinos. 

     

    Here is an idea that can help you with your "not enough turrets" problem:

    -Create a fatal funnel

    -Centralize all 100 turrets just beyond fatal funnel

    -fill fatal funnel with ankys (stack health and damage, this will mitigate brontos at the least, as they tend to get stuck on a wall of ankys) and create death blossom traps filled with hyenas and daeos. 

    -Create outer perimeter with concentrated turret towers (not one giant) if you spread these out you can deny avenues of approach

    -arknet (alternating layers of open hatch frames) to deny drops. 

    -build Phoenix, golem, and thorny dragons (any other turret dinos?) towers to further deny air drops (I recognize that these may not be effective at killing most flyers, however, any damage they can apply to target means survivors can drop the target)

     

    This game (in PvP) is all about resource denial and being effective with what you have available. It's too easy to create a wall of garbage that a raider won't waste C4 on when there is a fatal funnel they can go to. And if you make the wall of garbage well, they will waste more resources going in then they will get from the raid. 

     

    You will always face the potential of being raided. The trick is to learn how to make would-be attackers waste their supplies (and time) with little to no gain.

     

    And stop whining. Adapt and overcome, yo. I could at least understand whining about the "survivors only" setting for turrets as it instantly made most dinos useless.

    Turrets need to be hard limited like a tame count.

     All turret damage needs to be buffed but heavy turrets need to insta kill anything under a giga.  

    Plant X also needs a damage buff but it should also be limited. Plant X should also be the anti flyer meta.

    There also needs to be a prefabbed concrete pillbox/bunker structure to place turrets in.

    No more unrealistic metal towers with hundreds of turrets.

    We need bunker/concrete building tier that's outrageously expensive to build but also hard to destroy.

    make or improve better siege weapons / artillery to counter insta kill turrets.

    Thank you for implementing this change and I look forward to the Heavy Turrets and change in Base defenses it makes. I do agree that the effectiveness of Plant x should be increased be it range or something that will make them worth taking up a precious turret count. It will be interesting to see if the perimeters are increased, or what changes this creates.

    No I do not want it or anything to insta-kill as I cannot count the times I was flying around and all of a sudden got shot by plant x or turrets of well hidden defenses.
